Business Continuity Plan

 Business Continuity.

Do you have a Business Continuity Plan?

You should: your business continuity plan will contain all of the information you need to get your business running again after an incident or crisis…

The size and complexity of your business continuity plan will really depend on your business. You may choose to have separate risk management, incident response and recovery plans. If you are a small business, you might find a single business continuity plan that incorporates all of these elements suits you better.

Black Knight IT can help you develop a risk management plan which will identify your critical business activities. This risk management plan will need to assess the risks to your business and the strategies needed to be taken in order to minimise risk.

Offsite Backup risk management plan

Your first priority should be to identify all the possible ways of managing risks.
It is better to think about it now, rather then after a disaster has occurred…

Analyse the likelihood of the identified risks from happening.
(This could include looking at Flood maps, checking for fire hazards, seeing if your staff contracts contain a acceptable use policy… etc)
List all the potential risks that you can think could possible affect your business.
(eg. Flood, fire, theft, staff behaviour… )
Evaluate all of the consequences of the risk happening. Would your business be able to continue to operate? If not, what is the maximum time you could afford to be non-operational? Do you have a way of letting clients know? Rank the risks that need to be dealt with in order of priority. Double check your plan with another member of your business: to see if they have any other risks or would rank them differently.

Surprisingly, your Business Continuity Plan does not have to be expensive.

It depends on the circumstances: but backing up data securely offsite on a daily basis is enough for most businesses. For others, they may require a full business continuity strategy. Black Knight can help tailor a solution for your organisation that’s appropriate in size and scope – and offers the best value for money. Some of these options include automated online backup, real time email continuity, hardware resilience testing and backup and disaster recovery assessments.

What actually is BCP?

Business continuity is the process of establishing a plan that will ensure that business functions are still available to stakeholders during a time of disaster. It is best to think about it as an action that happens before disasters in effort to reduce or eliminate downtime if these occur

Guaranteeing fast recovery
of your data?

Having a copy of your data on an external drive or disk doesn't guarantee a fast recovery of your data or network. Most people don't realise that a data backup doesn't include all your software and settings. If you have to restore you server using your backup data, you would first have to re-install all your software programs and configure the settings. Only then could you install all the data - this entire process could take several days.

Onsite Backups

If you keep your backup onsite, it could be worthless to you in the event of a fire, flood or even a power surge. Smart business owners ALWAYS keep an offsite copy of their data.
