Desktop, Laptop and Tablets

Laptops long ago surpassed desktops in sales, and tablets and smartphones are taking a growing major market share from laptops. The tendency is clearly towards smaller, lighter, and more portable computing. But there are some good reasons to stick with a big box that sits on or below your desk.

So, have you made the right decision over a computer solution for your staff? Black Knight can help you assess your system performance, design and functionality requirements to ensure that your organisation is equipped with the right technology. We also configure, deploy and provide ongoing support for our suggested business solutions and have strong connections with partners such as HP, Asus, Lenovo etc…

Price and Performance

Firstly, there’s the price/performance ratio. It doesn’t matter if you are spending $300 or $3,000, you will get a more powerful computer for your money if you’re willing to give up portability. A desktop has a lot more upgrade options then a laptop: and can take more RAM. Also, with a desktop’s multiple bays, you don’t have to choose between an SSD and a hard drive on a laptop; you can have both!

Repair

This issue of repair should also be a deciding factor: it’s far easier to open up a desktop PC, check to make sure the cables are secure, clean out the dust, remove a broken part, and replace it with something generic. Laptop repair takes considerable skill, and many parts are costly and specific to that model.

Upgrade options

Although most laptops will let you easily add RAM and swap out the hard drive, upgrading a CPU or graphics card (which are easy tasks on a desktop) are difficult on a laptop (and impossible on a tablet!).

Keyboard/ Mouse/ Screen

At first glance, desktops have an ergonomic advantage, thanks to the big screen and full-sized keyboard. But not really: when you’re home or in the office, you can plug that screen and keyboard into your laptop.

Portable

However, laptops are portable: which may be your sole reason to buy one.

Electricity

Laptops use far less electricity then a desktop.

Desktop, Laptop and Tablets

With the release of Microsoft surface and the iPad Mini, as well as competing products from companies such as Samsung and ASUS, tablet purchasing options are looking better and better for consumers. However, not all tablets will provide the perfect solution for every buyer. Consumer could be trying to fulfil a variety of needs such as buying a tablet to check email, surf the web, take on the move or as a desktop replacement. All of these needs are important considerations that much be taken into account before purchasing a tablet.

Who will be using your tablet?

If your tablet is for your own use, you can base it on your own design preferences.

However if you are buying it for the another or for retail customers, it may be beneficial to choose a market leader such as an iPad as your customers are more likely to be familiar and comfortable with it..

What apps do you need?

Before purchasing a tablet it’s important to determine what app you’ll need.

The Apple App store alone has over 700,000 apps and is continuing to grow: which may be important if your business has a specific need. If not, you may want to consider browsing the android market.

Connection ports

Are connection ports important to you? Despite the growing trend to cloud hosting and being able to download all material of the internet: you have to ask yourself these basic questions:

1. Do you need a HDMI port to connect to your TV?

2. Can you live without a USB port, and do you want to be able to hook up a mouse/keyboard or even a DVD drive?

3. What about microSD?

Camera

A simple question: what are you planning on using your tablet for?

If you are purchasing a tablet with the intention of connecting with friends, family or for business conference calls, you need a front facing camera.

Don’t forget this important need.

Storage

Storage seems to be a simple one: the more the better right? Wrong. With storage options ranging anywhere from 8GB to 250GB, the upper end only necessary if you are planning on storing a lot of music or videos files. If your not planning on using your tablet for this purchase, then it may not be worth the bigger storage.

This is particularly relevant with the newly emerging Cloud services: you will have even less need for a storage space on your tablet.

Weight and screen size

Weight is often a critical factor when considering purchasing a tablet. Ideally, it needs to be as light as possible for easy carrying and operational with one hand.

Also, with screen sizes ranging from 11 to 14 inch, you need to have an idea of where you will be carrying it: will it fit in a handbag, or will you be holding it at all times?
